Culture of Hemp

Hemp cultivation comes back to the Neolithic era, the properties of its vegetable fiber allowed to find multiple purposes.

Hemp is then industrialized, you can find it in the textile sector, in construction, and finally sound and thermal insulation under the form of brick.

In food, the high proportion of essential fatty acids in its seeds would allow the plant to reduce malnutrition in certain countries. Hemp seed oil is one of the best oils in terms of essential fatty acid profile (EFA) with flax seed oil.

What else ?

Hemp is used to build solid ropes, a hemp rope of 12mm thick can bear a weight of one ton.

In composite materials, along with plastics and in paper manufacturing, it limits the consumption of their usual components, thus reducing the environmental impact …

Hemp is an alternative to conventional fuel, it can be used as a biofuel.

However, the cultivation of hemp was forbidden for a time in many countries like Italy.

Hemp culture in Italy

Hemp has been cultivated for a very long time in Italy. In the 19th century, 60% of the Italian provinces cultivated hemp, some of them, such as Bologna, Venice or Naples, were heavily dependent on hemp farms. However, as with its Western neighbors, its culture was quickly dropped at the beginning of the 20th century, it eventually became unpopularized to the point of disappearing almost entirely and finally becoming prohibited.

It is only in 2011 that the licensed Italian farmers were again allowed to cultivate the plant by the legislation. They now scrupulously check the traceability of the productions. For example, now each plant is assigned a unique identification and tag, such as an information sheet containing data about its owner and the serial number of its business.

By 2015, hemp cultivation represented more than 800 hectares in total, which is a 100 times less than at the end of the 19th century. However, in less than 5 years, the hemp industry has recovered very rapidly in a country where they have been completely banned, and the volume of farms is expected to grow significantly at the same time as production, as demand is increasing.

In Italy, it is in the construction sector that hemp is the most exploited. The production is then exported or transformed locally to build homes made of hemp fiber.

What makes the success of the Canapa Mundi

This great gathering around the culture of hemp is more than a simple grouping of exhibitors, the Canapa Mundi is also a meeting point for all its followers, traders and consumers, where some inform and others learn.

Collaboration is highlighted during this event, a place of exchange between professionals and their customers.

Since it is a show, its exhibitors will inevitably enter in competition, a friendly competition in harmony with the atmosphere.

Each one presents its products, its experiments and its innovations. Cultivation techniques evolve and so does patterns of consumption.
